As part of the twentieth anniversary of the UNESCO Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005), the Coalition for the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (CDCE) is partnering with the UNESCO Chair on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, Obvia, and the Faculty of Law at Université Laval to organize a series of four conferences.

The first Midi de la culture of the series will focus on the challenges related to generative artificial intelligence and copyright.

The growing use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the entire value chain of the cultural and creative industries. A great creative tool for some, it also presents major challenges for the future of the diversity of cultural expression in the digital environment, and especially for the remuneration of creators.

On the occasion of this first Midi de la Culture celebrating the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, two specialists in intellectual property will examine the relationship between generative AI and copyrighted works. Possible solutions will be discussed to ensure fair remuneration for creators whose works are used by AI systems, and to improve transparency, two issues discussed by UNESCO’s Reflection Group on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions in the Digital Environment, whose recommendations were made public at the end of 2024.
